Dr. Rhinehart serves as the Diabetologist and Medical Director of the Johnston Memorial Diabetes Care Center in Abingdon, VA where he has been in practice since finishing his medical training in 1995. His vision of a comprehensive Diabetes Care Center was realized in 2008; at the center the patient’s Diabetes Care Team is “preassembled” where he, the certified diabetes educators, and other specialists work together to achieve the various treatment goals discussed in “I Have Diabetes!! Now What?” Dr. Rhinehart has been awarded recognition from the American Diabetes Association (ADA) and the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) Diabetes Physician Recognition program for providing high quality care to individuals with diabetes since 2002. To receive recognition Dr. Rhinehart submitted data demonstrating performance that meets the program’s key diabetes care measures. These measures include eye exams, blood pressure control, glucose control, cholesterol management, and other quality measures.
Dr. Rhinehart, a Pennsylvania native, attended Juniata College and The University of Maryland School of Medicine and completed his Internal Medicine Residency training at East Tennessee State University serving as chief resident in his final year of training. After beginning his Internal Medicine practice in 1995 he developed an interest for diabetes. Johnston Memorial Hospital (JMH), the local community hospital, identified Dr. Rhinehart as a physician champion in diabetes management and asked him to serve as the physician advisor to their new diabetes education program. He became very involved in the center and committed all his continuing education to diabetes and its related conditions. Dr. Rhinehart developed a reputation as a leader in diabetes care. He and the diabetes educators at the center had the dream of a comprehensive diabetes care center that would incorporate physician care along with onsite education and subspecialist care. The dream was realized in July of 2008 with the opening of the Johnston Memorial Diabetes Care Center where he serves as the Diabetologist and Medical Director. The Diabetes Care Center allows patients to receive the diabetes management in one location where the care providers come together as a team to assist patients in meeting their treatment goals.
Dr. Rhinehart is a member of the Professional Section of the American Diabetes Association and frequently lectures to patients and providers regarding diabetes and its related conditions. He resides in Abingdon, VA and has been on the Medical staff at JMH since 1995 and has served as the Chief of the Department of Medicine, Vice President and Secretary of the Medical Staff, Physician Advisor to the Stroke Center and Diabetes Education Center, and has chaired numerous committees. In 2003 he received the Tri-Cities Business Journal’s Health Care Heroes Cup of Kindness Award for Innovation for his development of the Palliative Care and Wound Care Teams at JMH.
